Ultra Black Hair Growth II by Cathy Howse pt 2

Yesterday I finished reading the book. i am writing the review today because ti took me a while to absorb everything I learned and how I was going to share it. In the second part I learned about:
1. Conditioning should have moisture, protein, and something to stimulate your scalp.
2. You should be healthy
3. Reasons you should not  hot appliances.
4. How NEVER to use a hair brush.
5. The proper use of chemicals.
6. Recommended readings.
I do not want to give each and every detail because I feel you should highly read this book. If you are a new natural it is best that you learn early. if you are an old natural, perhaps you could learn a few tips. I love this book and as one of my New Years goals, I am going to do her regimen.

Ultra Black Hair Growth II by Cathy Howse

I have been reading Ultra Black Hair Growth II.  This book is a natural hair shocker. It is a black woman’s wake up call as far personal hair care and what we have been taught. She put a “common sense” approach to explain everything. It all makes since and makes me wonder what took me so long to find her. I am only half way through the book but I have learned some valuable things:

1. Trimming your ends does not make your hair grow.
2. Wash your hair frequently. At least once a week.
3. Moisturize your hair daily.
4. if your hair dresser hair is crappy why trust her on yours.
5. PH balance of hair and products.
6. No brushes.
7. Do research and use common sense!!!

I am on chapter 2 and I love this book! I am going to try her regimen The Monday after New Years weekend and Keep track of my journey. But I am going to Keep reading and updating you all.

Clip Your Ends: Protective Hairstyle

Just because your hair is in protective hair styles does not mean you do not need to clip your ends or throughly moisturize your hair. Keeping your hair in braids with synthetic hair is hard. It is harder to moisturize it. The synthetic hair takes moisture out of your hair. I assumed that keeping my hair in protective hair styles excluded me from clipping my ends... NEGATIVE!!! MAKE SURE YOUR ENDS ARE HEALTHY!!! Moisturize your hair! I know moisturizing your hair may cause your braids to slip, or you may not be able to throughly get your hair done, but so what! TAKE CARE OF YOUR ENDS!!! Don't end up like me!  My ends were fighting each other. They were so dry and brittle. There were tangles, knots, splits, tears, rips, EVERYTHING. This def set me back 3 months but you live and you learn. It’s just hair anyway… right…

Natural Hair Realization

So over the last day and a half I have been watching Kimmaytube Youtube videos. When I first watched her videos about 6 months ago, I thought she was doing too much. I figured she was rattling on and discussing issues that were really only her problem.

  • I swore that as long as it said no mineral oil, petroleum, parabens, -ates, and cones I was all good.
  • Who cares about porosity and lifted follicles.
  •  I knew that braids, cornrolls, and kinky twists was the best way to go for protective hair styles at all times.
  • I knew washing your hair once a week was horrible.
  • Co-washing daily is the truth.
  • Wide tooth combs is the best way to go to detangle.
At first I watched her videos over and over. I absorbed so much of what she was saying. I understood on a more scientific level. But I could not listen to this one woman alone. I knew that I had to do research. She did mention 2 books to read. One was Grow it by Chicoro and Ultra Black Hair Growth II by Cathy Howse. I decided I wanted to read these books on my nook so I was looking for the ebook version when I stumbled across this little booklet about hair. CLICK HERE I read this booklet slowly absorbing everything. I learned so much from this booklet. I learned how my hairs are flat and elliptical shaped. How follicules open and close and you need things with higher ph to close things! OMG! What have I been thinking? What have I been listening to? OMG!!!
When we see all of those chemicals on the back of bottles, I understand them now. They are emulsifiers, thickeners, preservatives, and some of them do moisturize. But most of them are good for your skin and not as good for your hair.
In order to find out whether is is good or bad for your hair you can also use this site. CLICK HERE Kimmaytube put me on this as well. It is shows what is good and bad for your hair, skin, body, babies, etc. It is a great site. it also explains these products and why they are hazardous. I am so blown, confused, and I really need to rethink my hair teachings.

Hair Typing System

Please do not be fooled by everything you hear and see on YouTube. Earlier I put up a post talking do not be fooled by websites that have off hair typing systems. The hair typing system that is in place is the Andre Walker hair typing system and the one that was made from Curls. The Andre Walker hair typing system is the original hair typing system adopted by many. It goes a little something like this:

1a. Straight - Soft, shiny, fine, difficult to curl, thin, oily, and hard to damage.
1b. Straight - Volume, body, thick
1c. Straight  - Course, hard, to curl, straight. Think Asain.

2a.Wavy - S pattern, thin, fine, can be styled.
2b.Wavy  - Frizzy, medium texture, a little hard to style.
2c. Wavy - Style resistant, very frizzy, course, thicker waves.

3a. Curly - Mix of different textures, loose curls, full, thick, frizzy, and S pattern. Hair tends to have a combination texture.
3b.Curly - Mix textures, medium curl amounts, tight curls.

4a.Kinky - Tight Coils, soft, fragile, more moisture then 4b, and defined curl pattern.
4b. Kinky - Fragile, tightly coiled, Z pattern shape, less defined curls, shrinks up, needs moisture and wiry.
THERE IS NO 4C!

The idea of 1 and no 1 sub categories is from Curls. And they have added a 4c. I love the idea of the 4c because that specifically defines my hair. Do not believe everything and be ignorant do your research and find whats right for your hair. Thanks Kimmaytube for making me realize this.

Trader Joe’s Nourish Spa Conditioner

norrish
This conditioner is one of thee best conditioners you will ever buy. It is cheap 100% organic and very efficient. This conditioner is so simple that you could  combine it with other ingredients to make you a deep conditioner..it is not harsh and you can use it as a leave in as well. I love this stuff! I wish I could buy it by the gallons. This kills the Suave Naturals Shea and Almond Conditioner.

Price: 2.99
Texture: Thick
Smell: Light & Great

Ingredients- Purified water, organic rosemary oil, organic valencia orange citrus, organic mango, organic lemongrass, organic ginko biloba, organic echinacea, organic willow bark, organic sea kelp, organic chamomile flower, organic textured soy protein, organic lavender, organic grapefruit citrus, Tocopherol (Vit E), Acetamide MEA, Cetyl Alcohol, Citric Acid, Methylparaben, propylparaben, botanical fragrance

The ingredients are pure as well. You always want a water based conditioner. Actually with any natural product the first 5 ingredients should be edible or natural. The preserving chemicals do not come until later, but they are not harsh and there is only small amounts. It has no, sulfates, mineral oil, or petroleum jelly.
NOTE:After doing more research, the parabens in this product are not that good, they are fair. The Cosmetics Database (http://www.ewg.org/skindeep/) tells you the harshness of products and ingredients.

Say Yes To Carrots: Hair & Scalp Moisturizing Mud Mask

Cost: $13.00DSC01404
Smell: Like Perm
Texture: Smooth
Rating: 7/10

This product is made up of all foods and extracts. It is so organic and natural that it has an EXPIRATION DATE! It is very thin, but still is creamy. It coated my 4c hair very well. I love the feeling of moisture my hair had even after I rinsed it out. I did leave this product on overnight and it worked great as a deep conditioner.
However, I am not sure if it works so well because I thoroughly washed my hair before I used it. I do not know if it will work on dirty hair like the Shea Moisture Deep Treatment Masque. I love this product and I am going to continue using it until it expires.

Food for Thought

On my Youtube Channel I was asked this question:
I have a sincere question that I hope you wont take the wrong way. Why the concern for the chemicals and unnatural ingredients in your hair products but not the same concern for what you put into your body? Ive seen vids where you say you take non FDA approved diet pills instead of going natural with the food you eat to lose weight. Why not be concerned in both areas especially since what goes inside is a little more important than what we put on our hair? Thanks
So I answered:
lol no offense taken, and you are right for asking. I take the same precaution with my hair as i do with my body. i have researched each ingredient in the pills like i have with the products that go in my hair. i am a healthy eater and i also take vitamins. I put pure things in my hair like I do with myself. I do not put as much "harmful" food in me and the same with my hair. I treat mineral oil/fried foods the same way if you catch my drift. thanks for ur ? imma blog about this

Tried that.

Thee Best Comb Ever!!!

This is thee best comb ever! it is smooth and strong.
It detangles very well and is heat resistant. You can use this comb to do a blow out. You can blow a warm dryer on it while doing your blow out and it won’t bend. This is a great comb to detangled your hair when it is parted in small seconds. You would use this comb after using your wide tooth comb. I absolutely love this comb!

Whipped Shea Butter 101: Results

This is my shea butter. It's called:
Mint to Be

Check Out the How To Video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=heOpdEa77VU

Whipped Shea Butter 101

I have been collecting ingredients and waiting to make my own whipped shea butter and this weekend I made my first batch!!! I'm all about passing it on so here's how:

Ingredients
16 oz Raw Unrefined Shea Butter (the darker the yellow the better)
2 tbsp Avocado oil
2 tbsp Grapeseed Oil
2 tbsp Coconut Oil
2 tbsp Extra Virgin Olive Oil
2 tbsp Safflower Oil
2 tbsp Sweet Almond Oil
2 tbsp Aloe Vera Gel
1 tbsp Liquid Lanolin
1 tsp Tea Tree Oil
1 tsp Jojoba Oil
1 tsp Vitamin E Oil
Vanilla, Peppermint, Lavender
Ylang Ylang, Sandlewood,
Rosemary Essential Oils
(italicized: carrier oils/ bold: preservative/ underlined: very moisturizing)

  1. Melt down your shea butter. (DO NOT melt it down all the way or cause it to boil!)
  2. Add your Jojoba & Vitamin E Oil
  3. Whip the mix for 5-7 minutes
  4. Place the mix in the fridge for 5-10 min
  5. Take the mix out and whip it for 5-7 minutes
  6. Add your carrier oils and whip the mix for 5-10 min
  7. Place mix in the fridge for 5-10 min
  8. Add your essential oils. (*** NOTE: if you have a large amount of shea butter and carrier oils, you will have to place over 100 drops of your essential oils. If you want your shea to smell strong and have good nutrients you have to add this amount.
  9. Whip you mixture for 15 minutes
DONE! This is just how I did it and it is open for your modification. :)

After the first step.

You can see it getting this after the fridge and all the whipping.

Shea Moisture Deep Treatment Masque

DSC01862Price: $9.99

Smell: Great

Texture: Thick

Rating: 10/10

This stuff is GREAT!!! The cost of this is really cheap. It is even cheaper than Say Yes to Carrots. For a deep treatment masque this stuff is really great, it has a vast amount of essential oils as well as extracts that really help your hair. It is also very thick and coats the hair really well. This product can also double into a leave in conditioner and a hair styling cream. This products also mixes very well with other conditioners and oils.

I like to put this product in my hair and leave it on over night. When I rinse it out my hair feels really soft and conditioned. I would give this product a 10/10 or 2 thumbs up! Cheap great deep treatment this is the way to go, and it is made for people with thick dry hair… aka ME!

Research

I have learned that with every great project you must do research. My big project is to make my OWN shea butter mix for my hair. I am in love with this Lavender Vanilla Pomade by "Created by Nature". I need to either make my own version of this or some other recipe I can call my own. I have learned several things thus far tho:

  • Shea Butter needs to be warmed in a double boiler.
  • You need a hand blender.
  • You need to know what oils to mix.
  • DO NOT use these oils undiluted or digest these oils.
  • This process will take a strong 2 hours!
  • Use MAJORITY shea butter and carrier oils and drops of essential oils.
  • SHEA BUTTER IS FLAMMABLE!!!

My $127 Whole Foods Haul

Thats right I did it! I finally brought all of the stuff I wanted to make my own whipped shea butter and hair oil. I am moving up the natural chain! yes this stuff was about $127 but it is worth it because these oils will last a very long time and will make me lots of products!!!

I Put This Ish on Everythang!

There is this majestic oil that I brought from Malika Cooper of Baltimore's Dreadz n Headz. I do not know what is in this oil all I know is that it is great! I have stretched it when it has gotten low by adding Coconut Oil, Safflower Oil (my favorite), and coconut oil. I will be going to whole foods soon to make my own.

Melting Shea Butter

At the flea market I bought 2 huge bags of shea butter for $10. i always wanted to use it but I did not want to rub my hands together briskly to warm it up for use. SO one day while in a hot shower I said WA-LAH!!!

I put some  shea butter in a ziplock  bag (I made sure it was closed tight). I then put the bag on the floor in the shower.

I killed 2 birds with 1 stone! I washed and melted some shea butter that I could use from head to toe.

The 1 Year Protective Hair Style Challenge

I am going to attempt the ultimate method of growing. I am going to keep my hair in protective styles for one year. Keeping your hair in protective styles helps it grow better. Hair will not be breaking off, shedding or getting damaged and I will not have things rubbing up against my lose ends. I realized my 4c hair is so fragile and gets damaged so easily. I have already noticed a significant change in my hair since it has been in protective hair styles thus far.

I will be achieving this majestic feat by getting braids, corn/cane rolls, triwts, tracks, anything protective.

July 24th, 2010- Braids
September 12th, 2010- Track
September 26th, 2010- Track
October 10, 2010- Cornrolls and Two Strand Twists

The Best Thing Ever

So after I took out the tracks, I had to undo the cornrolls. When I took them out my hair felt like desert storm. It was dry, brittle, ashy, cracking, it sounded like sandpaper when I rubbed it. I had NO curl patter and my scalp was flaking (which NEVER HAPPENS) and my scalp was so tender. I don't know what I was thinking but I did something on impulse.

  1. I rubbed this oil mixture I made in my dry crusty hair.
  2. After that I took some Shea Moisture Deep Treatment Masque and mixed it with Trader Joe's Nourish Spa conditioner. (I put glops and glops of that on my hair.)
  3. I then put a shower cap on my head and tied it up with TWO scarves. I left this on for 24hours.
When I took the cap off of my head after those 24 hours and rinsed my hair it was GREAT! My hair was moisturized and my curl pattern snapped back! It felt beautiful. I could have cried. I then washed my hair twice with the Trader Joe's Moisturizing Shampoo. I put oil on my hair while I was washing it. I conditioned and put more oil in my head. My hair felt amazing. But since I am on my 1 year straight of protective styles, I am getting the back cornrolled and the front 2 strand twisted. I can wear Koofies with little twists out or pull it all back. I love options.

Reason Natural Hair is Great: #63: It can be experimented on with ease.

Milky Way Yacky 1B Review

Cost: $25-$35 a Pack
Multipurpose: Yes
Texture: Great
Shead Scale: 7/10 (10 bad)
Tangle Scale: 6/10
Would I Buy it Again: YUP!

This hair is a very great brand of hair in several ways. It curls and straightens beautifully. It is also semi-easy to detangle.I knots up very bad. It also makes a horrible itch in your head. This itch was far worst then with the other hair I had. I did not enjoy that at all. I had to comb my hair way more then a few times an hour. It shead like a dog!!!! Its sheading was horrible. not as bad as some track I seen but it is gross!!! i have hair everywhere!!! Because this hair was 1B it was dark. If you got it wet in the slightest a black reside would be left on your clothing and/or face and/or hands, whatever it touched. It also caused my face to break out HORRIBLY. I had long hair before with bangs and swooshes... EVERYTHING but this stuff here did thee most to my face. The next day after i removed it and washed my face, my face did a 360! If you love track and it is your thing, then by all mean BUY IT. People who live, sweat and breath track would like this, but because this is my first time seriously dealing with track, I did not like it. I did hear that the Milky Way Permed hair is better. I would buy it again for it to be professionally done.

Assimilating Black Hair

Just a random thought...
If white people had kinky, curly, coiled hair, and black people had long, straight, shiny hair, then would we get texturizers to make our hair curly like theirs. Would afro's be a great look in the the work place and straight hair un-assimilated... Hmmm... What do you think?

1 Day Later

I'm almost done but I so had to rock a hat today.
(next is the invisible part then closure)
I'm almost done but I so had to rock a hat today.

Attempting the Sew In

Yes thats right, you have to start somewhere so why not with $100 track. I am going to sew in my hair by myself. Below is pictures of the corn roll pattern I used to sew in the hair. It has a corn roll going around my head. It also has the zig zag pattern in the back as well as a circle for the closure at the top.
I am am also going to sew in my invisible part that is why in the picture of the front you see the curve with lines leading from it. I am gone to sew a piece of track on each line to make the invisible part. This was inspired by ThaShoStoppa05.
I am using Milky Way Yaky Weave 1b. 14 &12 inch.
Wish me luck!

On Milky Way Indian Jerry Curl 1B

Track: 10
Styling Potential: 7
Tangle Level: 3
Overall: Strong 6
I loved/hated this track. After 2 weeks it was over. The track actually free-dreaded. I did every thing that was supposed to be done to it. I wet it, braided it up at night, de-tangled it, styled it, washed it... every thing. It still tangled too easily and was very hard to "blow out/straighten."

Happy Birthday to Me!

I'm 20!!!
There are people that I would like to thank for making my day great.
Grandma Kim
The only person that actually called and said happy birthday.
Sunil
You are a person that I wish I would have always had in my life. I don't know how we became so close, but I am grateful. You were there for me at the crack of dawn and made me alright. You give me a different way to look at things and no matter what you will always mean something so close to my heart. Your my pocket homie and I don't know what I would do with out you.
Jessica
I am so happy I know you. You made me feel really special. You gave me your ice cream when that is not what you wanted to do. You joked and laughed and went out of your way to make it great.
Tiearra
Thnk you for driving me to get the things for my birthday. I am so glad you help me when you do. I am happy you could come to the gathering for me. Thanks for hopping around like a hobbit.
Christina
Do I have to say it? I know you already know. My suga, my breeze, my hope. Thanks for being you.
Azania
They say Libras are a scale. A long time ago I thought i found someone that added to my balance. They just added to the side I was on, but didn't even me out. But you, you helped evened me out. Your my yang, your my zen, you keep me calm and help me see it all. The way you say things and your method of delivery help me soooo much. I am so happy I did not let others stop me from talking to you.
Angeline
Thanks for being the wild one. You got it jumping when it wasn't going anywhere. Thank you for being the catalyst to the night. I am happy we are growing closer. Maybe one day I will stop freaking you out.
People are given to you as a gift. It is your responsibility to take care of it. I value all of the bonds I have made and I truly want to say thank you all for contributing to making my 20th birthday an amazing day.

On My Weave

Week 1:
After about a week or so, my hair was getting very tangled! I put Knot Today detangler and water in it and it worked while my hair was wet but when my hair dried it was clumped, matted and gross looking. I also have to wet my hair every time it gets dry. Wetting it flattens it, gives it movement and detangles it. However when this hair is wet, it drips black. It is as if the hair was dyed before it got packaged. They drippings spotted my clothes. I felt like a Soul Glo rep. I also tried to blow it out to straighten, that was an epic fail...
Week 2:
To stop the clumping and to get the hair from dripping black, I washed my weave. I parted it into 4 sections and used Dr. Bronner's castile soap. I detangled my hair, rinsed it and braided it while I was in the shower. After I was done, I let my hair air dry. If you blow dry it, the glue for the closure and invisible part would slip.
Review:
Good:
  1. This hair is beautiful.
  2. I love the curls and I love how it looks and feels.
  3. I do love that you can convert it from straight to curly.
  4. Its thick and worth the $30 a pack.
Bad:
  1. If you add any product to this hair you have to wash it within the next 2 days. DO NOT ADD PRODUCTS IT WILL MAT AND BE HARD TO COMB. IT WILL FREE DREAD.
  2. It tangles & mats so easily.
  3. You have to keep it wet to get the natural curl look.
  4. It is not easy to blow out and straighten.
  5. It drips black when you wet it... ewww.
  6. Ends get ratty very quick.

My mommy doesn't like my hair
Womper#2
So I thought was gonna walk 12 laps around the track, I need to build myself up before I try to do the most.

Bam!

She Get It From Her...

Weightloss... Round 2

I know, I know. I have not been completely up-to-date with my weight loss success on the Zi Xui Tang Bee Pollen Pills. After I stopped taking them for 2 weeks I gained the weight I lost back. It is not September 20th and I have my weight back to 227. Now I am starting fresh. This morning (it is 2:31am. Yes mom, I'm still up) I will wake up at 6:45am and go to the track. I plan on walking 3 miles which is 12 times around the track. I am also taking my pills. From here is where we will start to document my weight loss on my weight loss PAGE. I will also try to keep a log of food I eat.

Tracked Up!

Hair I will be using.
First you cornroll your hair.
Then you sew it in.
Next you glue on the top to make an invisible part and a closure.
After you sew in the rest your done!
Wet it! It will curl beautifully!

Monday, September 13, 2010

Hmmm...

OMG! Cover back up your hair.
Short hair does not win beauty pageants.
Your hair is not soft.
the transition stage after going natural is... weird...
Put your hood on before someone see's it.
Wow, your hair is really coarse.
Geez! I am not a self conscious person. However if people keep saying the same thing over and over, it's neither multiplying or adding to your spirit and it gets kinda... annoying. It starts to make you think that something is wrong. So instead of waiting to get my hair done next weekend, I decided to get it done yesterday night...
... pics will be posted...

Taking Out the Braids

Taking out your braids can be a long process if you don't work smart. If you have braids that are 24 inches long and your hair is only 4 inches long, then look at where your hair is comming out of the braid and cut the braid before your hair starts. I would cut the braid and inch after where the hairs is coming out of the braid and where braid gets thin.
As you can see, I cut all of the braids and then I took the braids out. I combed the braids out as if I was taking out regular braids. When it got to the end I unwrapped the braid from around my hair. I then combed my hair. IF YOU DO NOT COMB YOUR HAIR IT WILL LOCK UP! YOU WILL HAVE TO CUT YOUR HAIR OUT!
After all of the hair came out this is what I looked like. You can see that my hair is longer! YAY! You can see that my edges took a small loss from those tight small braids.
This is all the hair that I had to comb out of my head. If you do not comb this hair out then it will lock in the hair that did not shed. If you can see what I am point to, it is a ball of dirt. Over time your hair will collect dirt. And if you are oiling your hair like you are supposed to it will collect dirt. You must comb this dirt out.
After I took my hair out I put in a pre-poo. The ingredients is what is in the picture on the side. I left that in over night. I washed my hair with Trader Joe's Nourish Spa Then Dr. Browner's Castile Soap. After that I conditioned and de-tangled with Aubrey Organics Conditioner that I blogged about previously.
All Done!
